The problems with outsourcing are vast. Cultural differences, time differences, employee churn, intellectual property theft and low quality code being among them. Pay peanuts, get monkeys. Every time I hear about a failed offshore project, I laugh and think “serves them right”.

This is a good point for ISVs developing software products that will be offered in a global market. It’s often overlooked in the requirements whether the ISV is outsourcing or not. Similarly developing software in an IT department for internal use at a global company may have similar requirements for multiple language support.

I18N and I10N do come up with our clients looking to outsource I’ll do some research and include this topic in one of the chapters.

We live in an era of global markets, not just global sourcing. This means we need to be concerned with i18n (internationalization) and l10n (localization) as part of the outsourcing effort. The effect on the software development process is that the efforts of disparate (geographically dispersed) teams of UI engineers, language specialists, and q/a teams need to be integrated.
