Situational Summary

The Business

Invafresh is an industry leading provider of software for grocery companies and fresh food retailers. Their solutions are offered as both a SaaS offering and as an on-premise deployment.

Located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, they have been in business for over 30 years and have a global presence, although the majority of their customer base is in North America. A large portion of their company is made up of product and cloud engineers, who build and maintain their software solutions, and they also have a sizable technical staff supporting and deploying their applications.

Vision

While their primary platform (FRP) is available in the Cloud, one of their applications (SMP) is still in the process of being migrated to the cloud. A part of that cloud launch is to do a UI/UX refresh, which has been completed for their FRP application, but is still pending for the SMP application.

Due to in-house resource constraints, they are investigating the potential of outsourcing product development on the user interface reskinning, which would also include some level of automation testing.

They would expect the selected Partner to  manage the project via Agile Scrum Methodology. They use Jira for tracking sprint issues, and they operate on two-week sprints. They would expect that Partner  to assign a Scrum Master to the team, and to engage in typical Scrum processes, including pre-sprint refinement, sprint planning, sprint review, daily stand ups, etc.

Based upon their internal estimation, they believe this project will take eight months to complete. Note that upon successful completion of this project, there is the potential for ongoing development work on this application.

RFI Process

Invafresh has initiated a thoughtful RFI for the purposes of identifying and engaging a best-aligned Service Provider. They have asked Accelerance to provide three qualified options, to be added to the three groups Invafresh has contacted independently.

All interested Service Providers must complete an RFI document provided by Invafresh. General areas of interest covered in the RFI include: Team Skills, Commercials, Service Provider Info, Resource Pool, Process & Engagement Model.

Onboarding and Ramp-Up

For the successful completion of this project, they need the selected Service Provider to build a team with the following skills:

  • Scrum Master (1)
  • Sr. React/PHP Dev. (Lead) (1)
  • Mid. React/PHP Dev. (5)
  • QA Testers (Manual) (1)
  • Automated Test Developers (2)

Qualified developers must be able to work within an Agile/Scrum Methodology as well as be familiar with Jira. Manual Testers must be experienced in SQL Server, and Automated Testers with Selenium, Java, Cucumber, and Spring Boot.

If the relationship is successful, future growth would include C++ development as well as DevOps - (n.b., Azure, CI/CD Pipelines, Terraform, Datadog, Chocalatey).

Desired Partner Characteristics

  • Location: Eastern Europe or Latin America
  • Time Zone: As much overlap with ET as possible.
  • Industry Experience: N/A
  • Other SME: As a growing company, Invafresh could have need for full time or fraction assistance in a variety of areas.
  • Certifications: CSM, as noted.
  • English Fluency: Full English fluency for the entire team.

Working with a New Partner - Relationship Vision and Timing

Invafresh would ideally like to have contracts signed by the end of November, 2022. Given end of year dynamics, they could start with the Scrum Master and the Senior Dev. in early December,, with the other resources joining in the new year.

Offshore Experience

Invafresh currently maintains a highly productive team in India. For this reason, they are interested in considering options outside of South Asia, only.

Decision Making Process and Timing

Gary Lais, Vice President of Scale Management Platform, is leading the RFI initiative for Invafresh. Others in the selection process have not been established as of yet.

What Q agency has to say about your project

Ryan,

Thank you for sharing this opportunity with Invafresh. We have completed the provided material and look forward to learning next steps.

I believe we would be an excellent Partner for Invafresh. The requested technology for this first project – React and PHP- is a core offering of Q. While we do not do as much work in C++, there will be no problem building and managing a team for them, certainly later in the engagement.

As you know, we have a lot of experience building product delivery teams for US-based clients like Facebook, Walmart, Coca-Cola, even the USPS. As a 600+ person company, we are proud of our work with these large companies, but equally so with many small and mid-sized companies that hopefully we will all know about eventually.

If we have the chance to meet Invafreh, we will want to highlight:

  • Q Agency is an end-to-end product development and consulting company based in Zagreb, Croatia --with offices in Switzerland, the UK, and the US-- currently employing over 300 engineers.
  • We have been servicing fast-growing scaleups and enterprise corporations in the US and Europe since our founding in 2013.
  • We cover a full 360° product lifecycle, from a business idea to the final product, by offering a wide range of IT services.
  • We've helped over 200 clients reach their goals, including Fortune 500 companies as well as the leading tech startups.
  • We have both lead project and augment internal R&D teams with European talent, helping our clients achieve investor targets and delivery goals.
As far as our response, the commercials are fine and signed off. Some of the questions in the last part have been left unanswered. If those are crucial let me know and I will provide additional clarification. I have also added our Agile Proposal template, as it contains a lot of information needed.

Let us know when a good time would be to meet the client and discuss a potential partnership.

Sincerely,

Mario Jerkovic

What DB1 Global Software has to say about your project

Ryan,

We have done research on our end and we would love to work with Invafresh. Thanks for involving us in this opportunity. After careful consideration of the RFI you shared with us, I can see why you'd recommend DB1, in particular based on:

  • 20+ years of expertise in Agile/Scrum with Certified Scrum Making Senseters
  • Strong expertise in the requested technology, especially React and PHP
  • US Culture alignment with strong English skills
  • Full overlapping day with DB1 headquarters Maringá, Paraná, Brazil.
  • In house recruitment team that allows us to staff the requested team in the time frame required.

We're a tech company that offers software solutions tailored to our customers challenges. DB1 group breathes innovation. We are committed to play an important role in the lives of customers, employees and community, towards digital transformation!

We are equally adept at either working as an extension of our customers in house team or building a dedicated team, fully managing the entire project. For Managed Projects, DB1 does 100% of people, process, backlog, and delivery management. We collaborate with our customers on their technology strategy, as well as defining important strategical features. We then build a multidisciplinary team dedicated 100% to the project. They are personalized squads, putting together the talents that your business needs when it needs it. We monitor results until the final user to ensure that the software is usable and scalable. Ongoing team training and development.

I noticed the important need for UI/UX and DevOps experience from a quality partner. DB1 has very mature processes in both these areas. Our UX and UI team provide leadership in a variety of areas: new product design, refactoring/product update, market and user research, facilitation of dynamics and interface design. Our Architecture/DevOps Team supports with assessments and recommendations on performance. Database, maintenance, security, availability, environments, IAC, CI/CD, monitoring, quality, etc.

Ryan, I appreciate your forwarding our response to the RFI to Invafresh. I hope we get the chance to review our response with them further, and review why DB1 would be an excellent, long-term partner.

All the best,

Wagner Lopes

What Making Sense has to say about your project

Ryan,

This is a very interesting opportunity for us: Invafresh seems to have the ideal characteristics to work with Making Sense.

We are more than 300 professionals with a business-driven mindset, geographically distributed in our offices in Palo Alto, CA and all over LatAm (Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, etc.). We are a team, we have just one goal: make our client’s succeed.

Looking at the RFI, we are well suited for this initial project. We were happy to read about the potential follow-on work. We will work hard to earn that business but, in the interim, we feel Invafresh will come to appreciate why Making Sense will be an outstanding long-term partner.

This begins (and ends) with our people. We care about our people and their needs, therefore we work hard to create the best work environment where all the Making Sensers find a place to fulfill their expectations and show their real potential. Through our company culture program - Making Us Better - we build the best experience at work reaching high levels of satisfaction and enable people to explore a successful career.

I noticed in the RFI that Invafresh is an Agile shop: we are too. In fact, our business success can be attributed to our Agile Process our Design Thinking Philosophy. We have followed an Agile development methodology since our founding in 2006. Since then, we have completed 100+ projects, delivering solutions that solve complex current problems that provide value well into the future.

We are proud to have had the opportunity to work with many leading companies, including Dell. 3M, Terminix, and LexisNexis. I hope we will one day be able to add Invafresh to this group.

We are attentive to next steps.

Thank you,

Marcelo Spezia
