Situational Summary

The Business

KRMA is a new, LA-based, independent Agency “Built for Brands. Designed for Performance”.

The Agency was formed by three recognized leaders in this area: Morgan Harris (CEO), Shaun Collins, CTO, and Kim Howe (COO). They have defined their careers executing digital campaigns for some of the largest brands in the world, including Nike, Coca-Cola, and Disney. They deliver Creative and Technology, “at the highest level, underpinned by Data Science for maximum performance”.

Their service offering is founded in five central areas:

  1. Digital Strategy
  2. Creative Services
  3. Software Development
  4. Data Science
  5. Media Planning and Execution

KRMA, as a company, is broken into two groups:

  • KRMA (agency) - Beautiful product design and rapid prototyping. Sophisticated software and application development. AI/ML and the latest Web3 technologies. Full-scale content production and media execution.
  • KRMA Labs - Dedicated work with entrepreneurs focused on cause-based tech initiatives. Work can involve development of MVPs or PoCs.

Vision

As they build the business, they understand their ability to provide outstanding Software Development will be impacted by capacity constraints in the marketplace. For this reason, they would like to develop a partnership with a nearshore Service Provider who can provide recruiting muscle, reliably providing highly-skilled engineers to work on their projects.

Offshore Experience

The KRMA team has worked with remote groups before, mostly in Eastern Europe and Latin America. The overall experience is similar to anyone who has frequently outsourced before: some good, some bad.

Current State IT Capability and Capacity

Currently, KRMA is relying on engineers within their network. Over the years, they have developed relationships with many outstanding resources but cannot rely on them when building the business.

Shaun Collins is managing those individuals on the various projects, and will continue to do so with the selected Partner.

Technology Stack

Their work mainly involves open source tech and cloud services (GCS, AWS). They would generally use the following languages and frameworks depending on the job. (N.B., The "Primary" items are the ones they generally use, everything else is "nice to have".

Screen Shot 2022-10-11 at 12.46.34 PM

Relationship Vision and Timing/Onboarding and Ramp-Up

The relationship will start right away with a “long term” project, requiring the following:

  • (1) Back end engineer
  • (1) "Producer" (part PM focus/ part Account focus)

Soon after, they will need to add a QA resource. The final team for this “long term” project would be:

  • (2-3) Back end engineers
  • (1) Full stack engineers
  • (2) QA
  • (1) “Producer”

That core team will need to flex up and down over the year as KRMA wins new projects.

Desired Partner Characteristics

  • Location: LatAm
  • Time Zone: Needs to work a full, overlapping day with the west coast, USA.
  • Industry Experience: Nothing specific
  • Other SME: As a growing agency, one founded on Data Science, they could seem their needs growing into a variety of areas. It would be good to understand the end-to-end capabilities of each Service Provider.
  • Certifications: N/A
  • English Fluency: Need fully fluent teams

Budget and Funding

A discussion was had about current pricing found in LatinAmerica, for Jr./Mid/Sr. Engineers falling, generally at $55/65/75/hr. This pricing was understood and accepted.

Decision Making Process and Timing

Shaun Collins and Kim Howe will be running the Partner review and selection.  Morgan Harris (CEO), will be brought in at the end to “advise and consent”. They would like to get moving as quickly as possible. While they would like the process to move swiftly, they do not want to sacrifice quality.

What CI&T has to say about your project

Ryan,

KRMA looks like an excellent opportunity based on the company's background, vision, offshore experience, technological stack, and leadership profile. We are very motivated to learn more about them, understand their challenges, and how CI&T can help them to create excellent  digital products for their clients.

As a Latin American company, with nearshore delivery centers in Brazil and Colombia to serve the North American market, CI&T's location is advantageous. In addition, there are some CI&T offices in the United States, one of them in the Bay Area.

Our dedicated International teams have served similar clients (digital agency) helping them create product strategies, design customer experiences, build web/mobile apps and platforms with enterprise-grade development to drive revenues and reduce costs.

We organize our teams in pods according to the client's needs and culture to maximize productivity and business results using Agile, Lean, DevOps practices and constant communication. We have teams that are fluent in the English language and have extensive experience with various technologies, including all the ones listed in the software languages (Node, Ruby, Go, Erlang, Python, React, Angular, Flutter,...) and infrastructure & middleware (AWS Cloud, Google Cloud).

Finally, I want to emphasize that CI&T is looking for long-term relationships, just as KRMA does, based on mutual trust, direct communication that can bring results for mutual benefit. We do believe that partnering with KRMA can bring both companies to this scenario.

Sincerely,

Miriane Machiavelli

What Applaudo Studios has to say about your project

Ryan,

We have reviewed the profiles needed for KRMA that Accelerance summarized and sent to us. Going over the profile needed of KRMA, we find a high degree of alignment with Applaudo Studios and we think we can have a valuable conversation to explore possibilities. We can confidently say we have specific experience in terms of industry, platforms, and tech stack that directly resonate with the requirements of KRMA.

We think it’s important to mention we work based on Agile frameworks providing efficient methodologies of project management and guaranteeing a robust team made up of the 1% talent in El Salvador and Latin America. Our team of developers not only works in US/Canada time zones but has the cultural affinity and language skills required for projects of this nature. We have a workforce of talented developers that will be immersed in your company’s project and vision regardless of where they are located.

Tech Stack and Capabilities

The tech stack (Ruby, Node, React, PostgreSQL, AWS etc.) falls well within our abilities, and there seems to be a great match in terms of expectations for the outsourced partner and our operations model.

Applaudo provides an administrated development service, meaning that we are actually taking ownership of the quality and deliverables of the teams involved. We are putting quality and timely deliverables as the center and upfront premises of every engagement with our clients. For that end Applaudo puts a whole set of leading roles such as Technology Manager, Technology Practice Lead, Web Architects, etc to support and guarantee the progress that comes out of every sprint of the development team; we as Applaudo are taking charge of everything on the developer ́s side so that the client gets coding upscaled capacity, retention (of the developers and thereby the knowledge) and convenience (by providing contacts for streamline communication). A client like KRMA can rely on our capacity for fulfillment, vision, and retention to have a long-term relationship.

To bring more light to the experience that we’ve had with the technologies mentioned above we could mention our work with College Engine, a modern tool for student applicants, parents, academic institutions, and advisors to create custom searches according to their criteria of location, areas of study, extracurricular interests, and price range. This tool enables a more efficient process for college application and for academic institutions to contact and enroll students who may not have otherwise applied to their school.

The first step was to understand their needs with the help of our Solutions Architect, in order to make good estimates of the project and build a useful tool for both the colleges and students. We worked with an Agile framework. In the kick-off of the project and during the first work sessions with the client we cleared concepts, the way of working in the project, communication channels, escalations, etc.

The Design team started the project which helped to have a lot of the designs ready and approved so that later the Frontend team could take over with Angular development. In parallel to the Frontend team, the Backend team, with Ruby on Rails development, designed the intelligence of the solution and the algorithm that is the baseline of all the proposals that the solution throws up.

After Thoughts & Key Figures For This Engagement

  • Here are some pointers and figures that we think might resonate with KRMA:
  • More than 300 projects completed, multiple and successful experiences working with companies coming from Y Combinator and other Tech oriented funds.
  • We bring project management experience to the table; we have proven experience working on new features with tight deadlines on projects like Keller Williams
  • NPS among our clients and re-engagement rate (renewal) are both above 85%
  • We are now at 800+ in headcount, and we have a fulfillment capacity of up to 35 developers per month. We’ve experienced with the biggest brands out there where we started with a small team of developers and grew our staff augmentations services exponentially.
  • Perfect sizing: we are big and experienced enough to tackle all types of complex deliverables and scalability fulfillments, but small/flexible enough so that we take an eager client-focused approach to all our clients.
  • Leads, CRM managers, and designated points of contact will be completely fluent in
  • English and will provide a convenient streamlined communication

Next Steps

We would like to have a meeting with KRMA on which we could include our Solution Architect and go into technical details of the type of profiles and the job to be done. We would create an assessment, from a technical standpoint, over if Applaudo Studios is a good fit for the upcoming development of KRMA. We could initialize the review of our MSA and SOW contracts, so these documents can be in place in case we move forward.

Please let me know how best to proceed.

What Modus Create has to say about your project

Ryan,

Thank you for sharing this opportunity. Based on the partner brief shared, we see many opportunities for synergies between KRMA and Modus Create.

As you know, Modus is a digital transformation consulting firm dedicated to helping clients build competitive advantage through digital innovation. Our global team of strategists, designers, and technologists has helped the world’s biggest brands deliver powerful experiences. We specialize in strategic consulting, full lifecycle product development, platform modernization, and digital operations.

Modus was founded in Reston, VA in 2011 by Pat Sheridan to Jay Garcia. They had a novel vision for building a thriving consultancy:

  1. Sell outcomes instead of hours, excellence instead of arbitrage
  2. Talent is borderless: there are knowledgeable developers, designers, and strategists located all over the world

Today, Modus is a talent-focused, remote company that employs over 300 people spanning six continents.

In many ways, we feel very much aligned with KRMA and strongly believe we can support their growth in dynamic ways. We are very familiar with their tech stack, with many case studies worth discussing:

  • React: Modus Create built a new mobile app for UNIQLO using React after extensive user research. The application dramatically reduced load times, increased engagement metrics, and helped boost UNIQLO's revenues in international markets.
  • Node.js: Roundup Cattle, a digital livestock auctioning platform, asked Modus to rebuild their existing online auction application. The application was not optimized for mobile and carried the risk of losing functionality. Leveraging our deep expertise with React and Node.js, the team deployed a new application in record time. The app not only hosted the next auction that Roundup had, it also boosted customer engagement.
  • Native Mobile: One of the world's largest telecom companies approached a leading cloud technology company to build an intuitive Android TV application. As a long-time technology partner for the cloud company, our team of experts joined forces to launch the app on Google Play in less than five months. The final solution helped provide a seamless cloud experience across mobile and TV to the users.
  • AWS: Hobsons, a leader in the EdTech industry, wanted to migrate all their applications from an on-premises data center to AWS (Amazon Web Services. Modus’ team of experts migrated 14 apps across multiple technologies and 50+ terabytes of files to AWS without causing any major outages. The final solution enabled Hobsons to handle more than 30,000 transactions per minute.

Ryan, we think Modus’s approach, team culture, and experience all point towards a successful engagement with KRMA and would like the opportunity to discuss their plans and what we have done for other clients in similar positions.

Please let us know when we can speak with their leadership. We ́d really appreciate this opportunity to discover more about the KRMA business and how we can help them meet their objectives.

Cheers,

Jill Antweiler

What Tintash has to say about your project

Ryan,

This is great opportunity: thanks. We feel very much aligned with KRMA and hope we get a chance to meet them.

Tintash is a Stanford Alumni-led company that has been working with numerous US-based clients since 2007. We take great pride in our work and make sure we attract the highest caliber of staff by matching the projects we take on to our team’s values. To achieve this we work on disruptive and innovative projects that our team is passionate about, and avoid those that we don’t have a high level of alignment with.

Technology Alignment

We believe we would be a particularly good partner for KRMA as we cover not only all the listed requirements except Erlang and Elixir, but also have expertise in Web3, blockchain development, React Native, Unity game development, UI design, UX design, IoT (firmware, product design and manufacturing), QA/testing, and have AWS-certified and GCP-certified engineers on staff.

Building Teams

We have a well-defined technical evaluation process for building teams, and have recently assembled teams of senior and intermediate developers in North America for one of the leading US-based cryptocurrency exchanges. Our process consists of individual and group technical, and team fit interviews as well as hands-on coding and project based testing to find the best talent for a given role.

Time Zone Overlap

We operate with hybrid teams distributed across North America and South Asia, and leverage time zone differences to accelerate product development by reducing downtime outside of business hours. North American staff are available to discuss projects on the east and west coasts.

Hybrid Team Model

Our hybrid team model has allowed us to accelerate PoC and MVP development for early startups such as Lifeprint and Embr Labs starting from their Kickstarter campaign, enabling quick updates and iterations on product requirements with overnight development. Teams are all fluent, passionate and get deeply involved in making every product a success.

With a wide range of clients including DraftKings, Bed Bath and Beyond, BBC Worldwide, Sesame Street, Universal and Hasbro, Tintash is able to bring a lot of experience and expertise to every project which is why many large global brands and IP holders have trusted us to build valuable applications and games for the past 15 years.

While I know their preference is to engage a Service Provider offering a full, overlapping day, I welcome the opportunity to show them how this Bay Area company is able to provide exceptional service to our many West Coast clients.

Sincerely,

William Schleifer
VP Client Engagement, Tintash
